This is a generative poetry workshop aimed at exploring and producing poems grounded in the body (or the physical experience). What we see and remember, often, are bodily and can propel us into poems of memory and contemplation: the way your mother's hands rested on the steering wheel of the Oldsmobile, the slimy skin of a baby born in the backseat of a taxi, the dislocated shoulder that changed the course of a football player's life. We all have stories about the body to tell. We'll read and discuss a variety of examples—from Walt Whitman to Nikki Giovanni to Robert Hass, and many more. You'll generate poems based on writing prompts and workshop your poem drafts. By the end of this 8-week session, you'll have a body (ahem) of work on which to build.
